Rs 63.17b tax-free Peshawar district budget presented

PESHAWAR: Peshawar District Nazim Haji Ghulam Ali presented a tax-free surplus budget for the district on Monday for the fiscal year 2007-08 with a total outlay of Rs 6,316,857,240.

According to budget documents, the total receipts of the district government are estimated to be Rs six billion and 316 million, while the total expenditure is estimated to be Rs six billion and 26.8 million, showing a surplus of Rs 50 million. District Council Convener Razaullah Chagharmati presided over the session especially held for the annual budget’s presentation. The district government’s total development budget is Rs three billion and 726 million, while the amount reserved for the Annual Development Plan is Rs 53.9 million.

Other components of the development budget are Rs 18.2 million for CCB schemes, Rs 0.7 million for Civil Defence, Rs 104.2 million for development schemes, Rs 94.5 million for grants to be given for development schemes and Rs 104.2 million for development funds under district grants. An amount of Rs two billion 913.7 million has been earmarked for the City District Municipal Department (CDMD), while Rs 423 million have been allocated for maintenance and repair by the CDMD.

Giving a breakup of the receipts of the district government, the nazim said that Rs two billion and 296 million will be received as share of district from the Provincial Finance Commission, Rs 363.9 million as district local fund, Rs 104 million as district grant, Rs 113 million from urban property tax and Rs three billion and 539 million CDMD earning.

Concerning the development projects to be launched in the upcoming fiscal year, the nazim said that these included the construction of a flyover (Mufti Mehmood flyover) from the High Court to Charsadda Road at a cost of Rs 260 million, the expansion of the road from Bacha Khan Chowk to Ring Road at a cost of Rs 60 million, the construction of Bara Road at a cost of Rs 10 million, the expansion of the Peshawar-Naguman road at Rs 180 million, the maintenance and repair of roads in Peshawar city at a cost of Rs 460 million, the construction of a zoo in the city at Rs 50 million, the conservation and renovation of historical buildings in Peshawar at a cost of Rs 50 million and the construction of a cricket stadium at a cost of Rs 28 million.

He informed the house that the district government was also giving Rs 15 million to the station commander for expansion of the Mall Road in the Cantonment area. He said the district government had earmarked Rs 15 million for the cleanliness of Peshawar for which mechanical sweeper machines would be bought. app
