140 students sent on judicial remand
RAWALPINDI: The Anti-Terrorism Court, Rawalpindi, has sent 140 students arrested during the Lal Masjid-Jamia Hafsa operation on judicial remand of two, three and four days to different police stations of the capital. The students were produced before the Special Court for Anti-Terrorism on Tuesday. They were brought to the court from the Central Jail, Adiyala, amid strict security measures. Judge Sakhi Muhammad Kahut handed over 61 students to the Kohsar police station, 56 to the Aabpara police station, 13 to the Bhara Kahu police station and 10 to the Margallah police station on judicial remand.
NAB arrests two officials

PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested two officials of the Excise and Taxation Department along with an agent for receiving a bribe from a motorist. Hammad, according to a press release of NAB, was fined by the Excise and Taxation Department for bearing unauthorised number plate on his car. The officials of the department later asked him to arrange Rs 5,000 to dispose of the case. The matter came to the notice of NAB, which along with a magistrate arrested two officials as well as an agent after they received the bribe money.
Tribunal appointed to probe into D I Khan blast

PESHAWAR: The NWFP government has appointed a high-level inquiry tribunal to probe the suicide bomb blast at the Police Lines in Dera Ismail Khan. The inquiry team includes DIG (Investigation) Peshawar Wadood Shah and NWFP Additional Secretary (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) Muhammad Fahim Wazir. The tribunal has been directed to find out facts about the incident, security arrangements at the Police Lines, lapses if any and responsibility for the lapses. The tribunal has been asked to initiate its proceedings immediately and submit its findings and recommendations to the provincial government within seven days.
Man commits suicide after killing wife, two others
CHISHTIAN: A newly married young man committed suicide after shooting dead his wife and two of her female relatives in Chak 4-D near here on Tuesday. Police said Muhammad Javed used to torture his wife, Mazharan Bibi, frequently whom he married some six months ago. Mazharan went to her father's house after Javed thrashed her over some dispute five days ago. When Javed tried to bring her back, she refused to come. Two of her relatives also asked her not to go back with her husband. This infuriated Javed, who shot dead his wife and his wife’s sister-in-law Saddiqa and aunt Shamim Akhter. The police reached the spot on a tip-off but on their arrival, Javed shot himself dead with his 12-bore rifle. The police registered a case.
DNA test of Ghazi’s mother to take time: DC
ISLAMABAD: The Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali on Tuesday said the DNA test of Maulana Abdul Rasheed’s sisters have been completed while the DNA test of his mother will take one more week. Confirming this news to a private television channel, the DC Islamabad said Abdul Rasheed’s sisters Umm-e-Jamila and Ayesha underwent DNA tests on Tuesday at Islamabad Sports Complex. He said further the DNA tests of Maulana’s mother will take a week and the dead body of his mother will be handed over to the heirs after the confirmation.
Two cops killed in Bolan
SIBI: Unknown armed assailants gunned down two policemen in Sunny area of Bolan district, SHO Dhadar Sadiq told newsmen on Tuesday. Police Hawaldar Allah Dad and his colleague were on their way home when unknown armed men sprayed bullets on them. As a result, both of them died on the spot.
Provincial autonomy draft bill sent to president
ISLAMABAD: The provincial autonomy draft bill has been sent to President Gen Pervez Musharraf. The bill, sent by the Inter-Provincial Coordination Ministry, recommends the handover of several federal departments and ministries to the provinces in phases. A two-thirds majority in parliament is needed for the passage of the bill. Sources told Online that the draft bill seeks abolition of the concurrent list, and has included certain recommendations made by the Waseem Sajjad Committee and the Mushahid Committee.
Spanish army chief calls on president
RAWALPINDI: Spanish army chief Gen Carlos Villar Turrau, who is on an official visit to Pakistan, called on President Gen Pervez Musharraf at the Camp Office here on Tuesday. President Musharraf hoped that Gen Turrau’s visit would serve to further the cordial ties between the two armies. The Spanish ambassador and other senior officials were also present on this occasion.
Mass marriage ceremony in Bagh
BAGH: Some 21 couples of the quake-hit Bagh tied the knot in a mass marriage ceremony held here on Tuesday. The marriages were arranged by Al-Noor Welfare Trust, which also provided dowry and cash to the newly-wed couples. Besides relatives of the couples, people belonging to all walks of life also attended the ceremony.
Passengers looted

NAWABSHAH: Passengers of a van coming from Hyderabad were deprived of their cash and valuables here on Tuesday when an on board gang of robbers took them hostage at gunpoint. The robbers managed to flee after the incident. No case was registered with police till the filing of this report.
Construction of ponds banned

KHAIRPUR: The Taluka Nazim Khairpur has banned the construction of ponds following the drowning of a child in a pond on Tuesday. Reports said one Abdul Qayyum Shaikh had constructed a pond in Madina Colony in which his child Shahid drowned.
Man killed in tribal clash

THATTA: A young man, Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, was killed and his brother, Shaukat Ali, injured in a clash between two groups of Magsi tribe in a village near here on Tuesday. Thatta police registered a case and started investigations. However, no cause of the incident could be ascertained till the filling of this report.
Team to probe decomposition of slain Chinese’ bodies
PESHAWAR: The NWFP government has constituted an inquiry team to probe the circumstances that led to the decomposition of the bodies of three Chinese who were killed on July 8 by unknown assailants at a workshop on Charsadda Road. The members of the team included Peshawar Elementary Education Project Director Mushtaq Ahmad Jadoon and Khyber Medical College Forensic Science Assistant Prof Dr Anjum Zia. The tribunal has been asked to ascertain the causes of the bodies’ decomposition. It has also been directed to commence the inquiry at once and submit a report within seven days.
Prof Gulshan takes charge as MS NMCH

NAWABSHAH: The medical superintendent of the Nawabshah Medical College Hospital (NMCH), Prof Gulshan Memon, on Tuesday urged doctors and the supporting staff to provide patients with better treatment facilities. Talking to newsmen after taking charge as medical superintendent, Prof Gulshan said in the annual budget the Sindh government is providing the NMCH with a grant of Rs 47 million. He said all indoor patients would now be provided with drugs without any charges. He said more attention would be paid to improving sanitation conditions on the hospital premises.
Work on drainage scheme stopped

KHAIRPUR: District Nazim Pir Niaz Shah Jillani on Tuesday ordered the stoppage of work on the Kakhi Shah Drainage scheme until the finalisation of a report of the inquiry committee he constituted during the inspection of the work. He said he would never accept use of substandard material and added any officers found involved in the use of substandard material would be punished. Reports said the scheme was started with an amount of Rs 2.2 million for removing the problem of poor drainage.
